Mark Zuckerberg was so fond of this remote Irish castle he happily paid double the initial market rate, dropping a staggering $56 million to secure the main historic residence while the massive 440-acre estate’s final cost still remains a secret

Mark Zuckerberg has paid considerably more than initially expected for his new Irish retreat, with official property records revealing a €51.17 million price tag for Strancally Castle in County Waterford, equivalent to approximately $56 million. The Meta billionaire and his wife, Priscilla Chan, acquired the imposing Gothic Revival residence from Michael and Giancarla Alen-Buckley, who spent 25 years restoring and maintaining the historic property. The newly published figure is almost twice the €20 million to €30 million valuation reported by property market sources when the sale first emerged in August. However, there is an even more intriguing detail behind the eye-watering transaction, as the recorded amount may account for only a fraction of the land that comes with the castle.

According to The Irish Times, the €51,171,155 recorded in Ireland’s Property Price Register covers the principal residence and up to one acre of land, rather than necessarily representing the entire 440-acre estate. The newspaper reported that Zuckerberg and Chan’s total expenditure would therefore greatly exceed the published figure, although the final consideration for the complete property remains undisclosed.

The sale was recorded on August 17, 2026, with the figure published on October 7, nearly seven weeks after the transaction took place. The distinction matters because the registered amount cannot be treated as the confirmed price for the entire estate, and there is insufficient public information to calculate how much more the couple may have paid.

Inside Zuckerberg’s historic Irish castle

Set on the banks of the River Blackwater near Knockanore in West Waterford, Strancally Castle combines the grandeur of a 19th-century country residence with the privacy of an expansive rural estate. The three-storey mansion spans approximately 16,000 square feet and was originally built around 1830 for John Keily, a former Tory member of Parliament. Architects James and George Richard Pain designed the principal residence, along with a nearby folly tower house and an inlet quay beside the river. Their other architectural work includes Dromoland Castle in County Clare, Cork County Gaol, and Blackrock Castle in Cork.

The castle’s interiors are equally distinctive, with historical descriptions detailing 11 main bedrooms, including five en-suite rooms, alongside four additional bedroom suites in the tower. Its reception rooms include an entrance hall, dining room, drawing room, and library, while decorative features include a cantilevered light-oak staircase and a black Kilkenny marble dining-room mantelpiece shaped like a crenellated castle. An indoor swimming pool was also added during subsequent renovations. The property stands approximately 2.8 miles upriver from the ruins of the original Strancally Castle, a medieval fortress associated with Norman noble Raymond le Gros.

A new chapter for the 440-acre estate

The Alen-Buckleys acquired Strancally Castle approximately 25 years ago and undertook extensive restoration work to preserve the historic residence. Michael Alen-Buckley cofounded London-headquartered private investment firm RAB Capital, while his wife, Giancarla, is the daughter of the late Charles Forte and sister of hotelier Rocco Forte. During their ownership, the property also hosted events associated with the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival, giving it a role beyond that of a private country home.

The departing owners said, “We leave our home of 25 years fondly,” adding that they were delighted the Zuckerberg family intended to continue investing in the property’s maintenance and enhancement sustainably. A spokesperson for Zuckerberg similarly said, “Mark and his family are excited to continue caring for this historic home.” The couple are understood to intend to retain their primary residence in the United States and use the castle when visiting Ireland, where Meta has maintained its European headquarters since 2009 and employs approximately 1,500 people.

Zuckerberg’s interest in acquiring an Irish property had surfaced the previous summer, when Liberty Media billionaire John Malone told The Wall Street Journal that the Meta chief had offered to buy his Castlemartin House and Estate in County Kildare. Strancally Castle now gives the family a substantial foothold in Ireland, but the most striking financial detail remains unresolved. The €51.17 million registered figure is already almost double the initial estimate, and the final bill for the full 440-acre estate could be higher still.
