The yacht was commissioned by Richard Liu, the Chinese billionaire who founded JD.com and built it into one of the country’s dominant e-commerce platforms. His involvement explains both the ambition and the contradiction. Liu recently outlined plans to develop megafactories aimed at mass-producing green, comfortable yachts that could be sold for less than the price of a used Toyota Corolla, a vision that sits in stark contrast to the existence of Deep Blue itself, a half-billion-dollar expression of private scale taken to its extreme.
