The Mercedes-AMG One hypercar project has been in the making since 2017, though owner deliveries only began in 2023. With a project as ambitious as taking an actual Formula 1 race engine and putting it into a road car, there’s bound to be delays, though the smashed records are worth it. For one particular high-profile owner, having an inside line at the company didn’t help either, and he’s had to wait it out like everyone else. Wait it out, even though he races for the Mercedes Formula 1 team, the very team that developed the engine in his new hypercar.
We’re talking about George Russell, of course — the newest owner of the AMG One to take delivery of the F1-derived hypercar. The F1 driver has been spotted driving it around the streets of Monaco alongside his girlfriend, Carmen Mundt, and fellow F1 driver, Alex Albon. Russell’s AMG One is customised with his race number ’63’. This should clear up any doubts as to who may own the ultra-rare hypercar, of which just 275 units have been made.
The Mercedes-AMG One is powered by a 1.6-liter V6 engine. Yes, you read right, AMG’s halo hypercar just has a tiny V6 engine. The magic lies in the fact that it’s been derived from the engine that went into the Mercedes Petronas team’s Formula 1 car from 2015. The engine has an electric turbo and is assisted by three electric motors for a total of 1,049 horsepower. The engine can rev up to 11,000 rpm and performance is staggering. The AMG One’s 0-62mph time is 2.9 seconds, 0-124mph is in 7 seconds, and even more mind-blowing is that its 0-186mph time is 15.6 seconds.
It’s no wonder then that the list of AMG One owners include F1 drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and David Coulthard to name a few, who are likely the only breed of owners who can truly harness its full potential.
