Mat Armstrong has made a career out of bringing wrecked cars back from the dead, but his latest project might be his most ambitious yet. The British YouTuber is in the middle of rebuilding a Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, one of just 60 ever produced, and he is now closer than ever to getting it back on the road.

The car belongs to fellow content creator Alex Gonzalez, who originally crashed the hypercar. After being paid out by insurance, Gonzalez bought the car back from a Copart auction for around $1.9 million, a steep discount from the $4–4.5 million these hypercars typically command. Rather than scrap it, he brought Armstrong in to fix it privately.

The damage was severe. The front end had taken a serious hit, with deployed airbags, cracked carbon fibre, and a heavily damaged transmission. Bugatti quoted approximately $1.7 million for a factory repair, and when Gonzalez turned that down, the manufacturer refused to sell official parts or support an independent rebuild, effectively blacklisting the car’s VIN. That is when Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac stepped in publicly, raising genuine safety concerns about independent repairs on a car this complex.

He pointed out that the gearbox housing had shattered and the monocoque had taken structural damage, warning that shortcuts could have serious consequences. But rather than simply shut the door, Rimac said he would support the project, and Bugatti eventually lifted the parts blacklist and reduced their repair estimates.

Armstrong and his team have pressed ahead regardless. One of the most remarkable moments in the build was the gearbox mount, a part engineered to deliberately break in a crash to redirect forces through the car’s body and limit wider damage. The downside is that even a minor shunt can snap it. A replacement was astronomically expensive, so a specialist TIG welded it back together, a repair many thought was simply not possible on a component designed to fail.

The partial parts freeze forced some creative thinking elsewhere, too. When a pinched coolant overflow pipe needed fixing and no Bugatti parts were coming, the team sorted it with a section of rigid brake hose. It is that kind of improvisation that has defined the whole project. Armstrong even noted that the accelerator pedal controlling all that horsepower is just a piece of moulded plastic, not billet aluminium. For a car worth millions, it is the kind of detail that makes you laugh.

Valvetronic stepped in to fabricate a custom exhaust for the car, and with the front and rear halves of the Chiron finally reunited and bolted back together, the team got it started. The sound alone made the whole rebuild feel worth it. With the car now largely together and running, Armstrong is confident they will be driving it in the next episode.
