Pink Floyd’s drummer Nick Mason is giving collectors a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a piece of both rock and automotive history — a 1995 VW Golf Mk3 Cabriolet Pink Floyd Edition from his personal collection. A far cry from the priceless Ferraris in his collection, but possibly rarer than most supercars on the road today, this commemorative edition of the Golf was purchased by Mason as a personal project car. It’s now being offered on auction by Iconic Auctioneers for a charity close to his family’s heart.
The Mk3 Golf was an utterly ordinary family car. But the Pink Floyd Edition transformed it into something special. Created by Volkswagen to commemorate the band’s 1994 European Division Bell Tour, these limited editions featured distinctive Pink Floyd badging inside and out, band logos on the upholstery and gear lever, album artwork adorning the seats, and a premium sound system bearing the band’s insignia. The cars were offered in a unique Soundblue Pereleffekt paint and came with body-colored bumpers and mirrors, turning a humble hatchback into rolling memorabilia.
Volkswagen produced similar special editions during the 1990s for The Rolling Stones and Bon Jovi, capitalising on their sponsorship of major European rock tours. These band edition Golfs rarely surface for sale, making them highly sought after by collectors. In fact, Nick Mason purchased this Golf himself several years ago to fully restore himself. Unlike many celebrity cars handed out as part of sponsorship deals, he sourced and bought this example personally. Though the restoration was never completed, the car comes with an extensive collection of parts and four original wheels, ready for its next custodian to finish the project.
What elevates this auction beyond a typical classic car sale is the accompanying treasure trove of memorabilia. Mason has signed the car itself and included a pair of signed drumsticks, a signed copy of his book Into the Red, four signed vinyl albums, an original Pink Floyd and VW-branded T-shirt, and several signed DVDs. All proceeds will benefit Harefield Hospital’s Healing Garden in the UK.
For enthusiasts, this represents an extraordinary opportunity. Mason’s other cars, including his Ferrari 250 GTO worth well over $40 million and a collection valued in the tens of millions, will likely never come to market.
