Pope-mobiles have always been created keeping safety and comfort in mind. However, iconic motorcycling giant Harley Davidson thought otherwise while gifting His Holiness Pope Francis a swanky new bike to celebrate the company’s 110th anniversary in June, 2013. As expected, Pope Francis was quite pleased with this gift but given the fact that riding a Harley Davidson isn’t on his to-do list during his tenure as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, he’s decided to auction it with proceeds being donated for charity. The 1,585cc Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide presented to Pope Francis will be auctioned on the 6th February 2014 as part of Bonhams’ Les Grandes Marques du Monde sale at the Grand Palais in Paris and proceeds from this sale will go to Caritas Roma, a charity that works on behalf of the Church globally.
Priced at more than $16,000 when fresh off the assembly line, the bike is expected to draw quite a hefty sum, given the fact that it once belonged to an extremely illustrious owner. The bike also sports His Holiness’ sign on its tank and will include a certificate of conformity from Harley-Davidson. Funds from this sale will be used in the renovation of the Caritas Roma’s Don Luigi di Liegro hostel and soup kitchen based at Rome’s Termini railway station.
