I knew it! I knew I had to be in Naples, from the time I flipped through the pages of Eat, Pray, Love and how Elizabeth Gilbert beautifully explained the pizza haven of Naples. Had I packed my bag and left for Naples, I could have seen this splendour and maybe even had a bit of the world’s largest pizza – declared by the Guinness World Records. This is 1.8km long, breaking the previous record of 1.5 which was measured at the World Expo in Milan last year.
This pizza, took 250 pizza makers, but a total team of 400, 11 hours using 2,000kg of flour, 1,600kg tomato sauce, 2,000kg mozzarella cheese, 200 litres of oil and 30kg of basil. And voila! This was then fed through five motorised custom-made wood-burning stoves which were wheeled down the length of the pizza. Once the measurements were taken and the declaration made, the pizza was donated to the needy. I could have been there too, I am always in need of pizza. Just a slice, you know.
