While the new Air Force One being built by Boeing keeps on getting hopelessly delayed, the US leader isn’t waiting: the Qatar-gifted 747, rushed through a 10-month conversion, takes its first official flight on the 1st of July to North Dakota and very soon all the way to China.

America’s newest presidential aircraft is expected to make its first official mission next week, marking the operational debut of the Boeing 747-8 gifted by the Qatari government after months of rapid modifications and exhaustive security checks. The aircraft, designated by the US Air Force as the VC-25B Bridge aircraft, is scheduled to fly on July 1 to North Dakota for the dedication of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The inaugural flight marks the beginning of a temporary but significant chapter in presidential aviation. Intended to bridge the gap until Boeing delivers the long-delayed next-generation Air Force One fleet in 2028, the converted jumbo jet will enter service during a series of events celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, giving the aircraft an unusually high-profile debut.

A record-speed conversion before its “final exam”

Despite completing its modifications and flight testing, the aircraft has not yet been formally commissioned into the executive airlift fleet. It is currently undergoing what the Air Force describes as its commissioning flights, referring to the process as the aircraft’s “final exam.” Successful completion of these flights clears the way for its first presidential mission, making the July 1 trip a milestone in its transition from a former VIP jet to a presidential aircraft.

The conversion itself was remarkably fast. Defense contractor L3Harris transformed the former Qatari aircraft in roughly 10 months at its Greenville, Texas, facility, where about 400 employees worked around the clock in three shifts to meet an accelerated deadline ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.

Reports indicate that some less frequently used capabilities planned for the full next-generation VC-25B program were deferred to speed up delivery, while ensuring the aircraft retained the core systems required for presidential operations.

Security, rather than luxury, dominated the retrofit. Sections of the Boeing 747-8 were reportedly stripped back to their wiring so specialists could conduct extensive forensic inspections, ensuring no monitoring, recording or surveillance devices remained from its previous service.

While many of the aircraft’s defensive systems remain classified, the Air Force has stated that “no risk was taken in security, safety, or mission communications,” while acknowledging the bridge aircraft does not carry every mission capability planned for the future presidential fleet.

Boeing’s replacement Air Force One’s have been delayed again, this time to 2028

Filling the gap until Boeing’s new fleet arrives

The VC-25B Bridge aircraft has become necessary because Boeing’s replacement Air Force One program has suffered years of delays. The two purpose-built presidential aircraft were originally expected in December 2024, but deliveries have slipped to 2028, creating the need for an interim solution.

The iconic VC-25A entered service in 1990, meaning America’s presidential jet is now more than 35 years old.

The decision to place the converted 747-8 into service followed repeated criticism of the aging presidential fleet, which has experienced operational issues in recent years, including delays affecting official travel. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink has said the modifications to the gifted aircraft would likely cost less than $400 million, significantly less than procuring an entirely new presidential jet.

A patriotic debut with a new identity

The North Dakota mission is expected to be the first of several high-profile appearances. Two days later, the aircraft is scheduled to travel to South Dakota for the “Rushmore 250” celebration at Mount Rushmore, where fireworks will return to the national memorial for the first time since 2020 as part of the White House’s Freedom 250 program. On July 4, it is also expected to lead a military flyover over Washington, DC, during Independence Day celebrations before making its likely first overseas trip to the NATO summit in Turkey later in July.

The aircraft has also received a dramatic visual makeover. During its unveiling at Joint Base Andrews on June 19, a new white livery accented with bold red and navy blue stripes replaced the familiar light blue color scheme associated with presidential aircraft since the Kennedy administration. “We liked the baby blue, but it was time for a change,” President Donald Trump said while introducing the redesigned aircraft, adding that the updated look reflected his own preferences. The ceremony itself was staged with theatrical flair as he descended the aircraft’s stairs to the sound of “God Bless the USA.”

Until Boeing’s long-awaited next-generation presidential aircraft finally enter service, the VC-25B Bridge aircraft is set to become the temporary face of presidential travel, carrying one of the world’s most demanding aviation missions while serving during one of the most symbolic periods in modern American history.
