No location is more enchanting in the movies than in New York City. We have seen bits and pieces of the most exciting address in the world from the very advent of cinema. Located in this fascinating city of life, one of the most popular and decadent streets in the world – the fifth avenue is The Peninsula New York. And nestled in this glamorous address is one of the most luxurious spas in Manhattan – The Peninsula Spa New York. If this were to be a Broadway musical, the drums would hit the crescendo right about now.
A recipient of the Forbes Travel Guide Five-star Spa, the honor is evident from the minute you step in through its doors.
The spa is spread over two floors, level 21 and 22, and covers an area of 33,000 sq feet. It is one of the handfuls of luxury hotels in Manhattan to offer a pool, and this one was heated, offering stunning views of the island’s skyline.
“The view from the pool is just breathtaking.”
There is a constant symbiosis of the old and the new and the orient and the west in its settings and general feel. The Asian-inspired interiors are designed in rich scarlet and earthy tones, adding an obvious element of the orient to keep in line with the hotel’s roots in Hong Kong. The walls are decorated with gold, mosaic tiles giving a picture of the rising-sun “golden east.” There is a bit of nature infused into the ambiance with teak-tree sculptures, red couches, and chairs made from salvaged acacia trees in the relaxation lounge.
The spa consists of 12 treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite, which gives Manhattan views toward the Hudson River.
The locker rooms feature aromatherapy showers, a steam sauna, and thermal suites. The hotel recommends that you reach an hour before the treatment to relish in the Thermal Suite, including the eucalyptus steam room. Showers offer rain-forest shower settings or the regular jet flow. The area is well-stocked with all the necessary grooming amenities and mineral water, and green apples.
“The calmness of the spa is a much welcome from the hustle and bustle of NYC.”
The spa menu is rich with plenty of interesting and intoxicating treatments – for the jetlagged, to expecting mums. I chose the Jet-lag Eliminator Aromatherapy Massage, which did absolute justice to my tired muscles after three long days of strolling through NYC. The treatment uses two types of oil – energizing or soothing, to help balance your energy levels. I chose the energizing oil, which helps lift spirits, instead of the soothing oil that helps you relax with untroubled sleep.
My masseuse, David, was no novice. He has been with the hotel for the past 14 years and knew all the rights spots that needed some pressure and calm. His 14 years of experience easily washed out all traces of stress my poor heels developed, walking 14 miles each day.
The energy booster was all the fuel I needed to explore the Big Apple the following day.
