While everyone else in the hypercar business is chasing kilowatts and touchscreens, Hennessey just walked in the opposite direction and built a car with a manual gearbox, a naturally aspirated V8, and not a single digital display in sight. Meet the Hennessey Blackbird, the Texan tuning house’s third hypercar after the Venom GT and Venom F5, and by far its most romantic in the current scheme of things.
The name isn’t a random nod to a cool-sounding jet. Hennessey has actually gone and trademarked “Blackbird” for road cars, and the Lockheed SR-71 shows up everywhere here, from the long, low proportions to a crisp chine line running down the flanks that mimics where the spy plane’s upper and lower surfaces pinch together. There are even active vertical stabilizers out back that pop up automatically at 71 mph, tilted to 71 degrees.
Under the rear glass sits an all-new 6.2-liter V8 co-developed with Ilmor, with no turbos and no hybrid assist. Hennessey estimates between 800 to 850 horsepower, a redline somewhere past 9,000 rpm, and all that power sent through a six-speed gated manual to the rear wheels alone. That’s good for 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and a 220 mph top end, proving that good old fashioned combustion is far from out of style.
Step inside and the minimalism gets almost stubborn. No infotainment screen, no buttons on the wheel, just a fat analog tachometer front and centre and a physical key you actually turn. Your phone handles CarPlay duties from a hidden holster, because Hennessey wants your attention on the road, not a UI. There’s also genuine usability here, with room for two carry-on bags and four cup holders. The American hypercar boutique clearly has its priorities straight.
Only 71 will be built, each hand-assembled in Sealy, Texas, with prices starting from $2.5 million before taxes. More than two-thirds are already spoken for, which tells you plenty about how many collectors are tired of hypercars that feel like they were designed by committee and a software team. The Blackbird debuts publicly at The Quail on August 14, with customer deliveries expected from 2029.
