John Mayer turned his beloved Land Rover Defender into a limited-edition guitar collection, and PRS may have sent Fender a message with it

Some brand collaborations feel like marketing for the sake of it. This particular one, between PRS Guitars, Land Rover and John Mayer, feels like a match that was meant to be. The result is the Silver Sky Defender Color Collection, eight limited-edition guitars finished in paints lifted straight from the Defender’s color chart. The inspiration? Mayer has owned an Arles Blue Defender for close to two decades, and somewhere along the way the car’s palette started looking like a guitar finish waiting to happen.

The PRS collection splits in two lines. Four heritage shades, Arles Blue, Willow Green, Portofino Red and Sandglow Yellow, land on the US-made Silver Sky, complete with white pickguards, matching painted headstocks and a hard case carrying the Defender logo. Only 500 of each colour will exist worldwide.

The more affordable SE Silver Sky gets four modern Defender shades, namely Petra Copper, Sedona Red, Carpathian Grey and Woolstone Green, with black pickguards and knobs, a first for any Silver Sky. These aren’t limited, though the order window shuts in mid 2027 so they’re not exactly a high-volume item either.

If you have a classic Defender on the driveway, you can now buy a guitar that matches it, chosen by a man who clearly cares about the details. Even if you don’t, you get a rather handsome instrument with a good story attached. Then there is the name – Defender. De-Fender.

Fender built its reputation partly on DuPont nitrocellulose automotive lacquers borrowed from 1950s car paint, along with the two-tone finishes, which gave them their distinctive patina over time. Speaking of, the timing of PRS’ new release is quite serendipitous. Fender has been sending cease and desist letters to guitar makers over Strat-shaped bodies, and PRS, whose Silver Sky line is very much in that neighbourhood, was among the recipients. PRS is now returning the favour with car-inspired paint in collaboration with two of the greats. It is a polite way of saying, “we can play this game too.”

None of this is stated in the press release, of course, though we are allowed to enjoy the subtext. The guitars are available to preorder through authorised PRS dealers. A small run in British Racing Green will not be sold, and will instead raise money for the Defender Service Awards and Mayer’s Heart and Armor Foundation.
