Porsche has introduced the new 992.2-gen Carrera S, which gets more power and standard features but has lost the manual option

Porsche has unveiled the latest addition to its 992.2-generation lineup with the 2025 911 Carrera S, bringing significant performance upgrades along with a controversial change that might disappoint purists. The new model gains considerable power but drops the previously available manual transmission option, leaving enthusiasts with fewer choices for three-pedal driving.

In a move that showcases Porsche‘s commitment to performance, the updated Carrera S now produces 473 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine, marking a substantial 30-horsepower increase over its predecessor.

The power boost comes courtesy of new turbochargers and optimized charge-air cooling, though torque remains unchanged at 390 pound-feet. This power upgrade effectively matches the output of the previous-generation GTS model, highlighting Porsche’s strategy of continuous improvement across its model range.

The increased power, combined with the standard eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, enables the Carrera S to achieve impressive performance figures. When equipped with the Sport Chrono Package, the coupe can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, shaving 0.2 seconds off the previous model’s time. Porsche claims the updated Carrera S can hit a top speed of 191 mph.

However, the elimination of the seven-speed manual transmission option leaves just two models in the 911 range available with a stick shift: the driver-focused Carrera T and the track-oriented GT3. This decision reflects an industry-wide trend toward automated transmissions, though it may disappoint enthusiasts who value the engagement of manual gear selection.

The 2025 model year brings additional standard features to justify its significant price increase. The Carrera S now includes the Sport Exhaust system, upgraded brakes inherited from the previous GTS model (with 408mm front and 380mm rear discs), and more extensive leather interior trim. The exterior receives subtle updates consistent with other 992.2 generation models, including revised front air intakes and matrix LED headlights.

Pricing for the new model reflects these upgrades, with the Carrera S coupe starting at $148,395 and the Cabriolet at $161,595 – representing approximately $15,000 increases over their predecessors. The coupe comes standard as a two-seater with rear seats available as a no-cost option, while the Cabriolet maintains a fixed 2+2 configuration.

Porsche has also enhanced the car’s handling characteristics through updated dampers that promise improved ride quality and responsiveness. Optional performance upgrades include rear-wheel steering with a quicker steering ratio, a front-axle lift system, and ceramic composite brakes.

The 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera S is available to order now, with deliveries expected to begin in spring 2025. It slots into the 911 lineup between the base Carrera and the recently introduced hybrid GTS model, further expanding Porsche’s range of high-performance sports cars while embracing modern automotive trends – for better or worse.
