It might sound a little odd to true petrolheads but the battle to build the fastest SUV has commenced. Till a few hours back, Lamborghini Urus, powered by the 650 horsepower twin-turbo V8, was the fastest production SUV in the world with a top speed of 189.5mph. British luxury automaker Bentley decided to respond to the claim by creating a new version of the Bentayga, which has been re-tuned to go faster than the standard model. Called the Bentayga Speed, the uber-luxurious SUV’s 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 has been massaged to get a bump of 26 horsepower, taking the total output to 626 horsepower. This has not only helped the Bentley Bentayga Speed accelerate quicker from zero to 60mph in just 3.9 seconds, down from the standard car’s 4.1sec, but also get a new top speed of 190mph. The new top speed figure makes the Bentayga the new fastest production SUV in the world, beating the Urus 0.5mph. That’s right, just 0.5mph!
Thanks to the bump in power, Bentley says it also had to recalibrate and update other systems on the Bentayga. The British automaker said: “the Sport mode has been recalibrated to enhance response from the W12 engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as the suspension and Bentley Dynamic Ride. The effect is a more dynamic and engaging drive.” In terms of aesthetic updates, the new Bentayga Speed comes with tinted headlights and a spoiler on the back. While 22-inch wheels and carbon ceramic brake are optional extras, firmer suspension, throatier exhaust and extended body kit all come as standard. The Bentayga Speed will make its debut in March at the Geneva auto show where the price is also likely to be announced.
