After a long wait, Chanel has added a new high-end timepiece to its Monsieur watch collection. The French luxury fashion house originally debuted the Monsieur line-up of men’s watches in 2016, and the new model brings back focus on the collection. Meet the Chanel Monsieur Superleggera Edition, a supercar-inspired timepiece that features a fresh new sporty design. Superleggera is Italian for super light and is usually suffixed with high-performance supercars and superbikes. However, this is not the first time Chanel has used the Superleggera name for a watch. The first Chanel Superleggera was part of the J12 Chronograph collection, and it debuted back in 2005.
While the new Chanel wears the moniker Superleggera, it focuses more on sporty aesthetics than lightweight construction, which is ironic. The 42mm round case is made using matte black ceramic and steel. The dial of the Monsieur Superleggera is inspired by instrument clusters usually found in supercars, where the 270-degree retrograde minute indicator looks like a speedometer. At the same time, the jumping hour display at 6 o’clock is styled like a gearshift indicator. The textured part of the dial displays guilloche machine engraving work, while it is partially skeletonized on the periphery.
The Monsieur Superleggera Edition is powered by Chanel Calibre 1 made for the Parisian brand by Romain Gauthier. The manually-wound movement operates at 4Hz and offers 72 hours of power reserve. The stunning hand-decorated movement is visible from the transparent sapphire crystal caseback. To match the sporty theme of the watch, Chanel has paired it with a strap made from black calfskin leather and black nylon that features a bright red inner-lining. The Chanel Monsieur Superleggera Edition will go on sale next month and carry a price tag of $39,400.
