Mark Hamill’s original Luke Skywalker lightsaber from The Empire Strikes Back fetches $3.75 million to set a new Star Wars auction record

Luke Skywalker’s original lightsaber has carved out a new place in auction history after selling for an extraordinary $3.75 million at Heritage Auctions, making it the most expensive Star Wars prop ever sold. The record-breaking sale eclipsed the $3.6 million fetched by Darth Vader’s lightsaber last year, highlighting the enduring appeal of one of cinema’s most iconic franchises.

The prop was offered during Heritage’s Hollywood & Entertainment Signature Auction, although it still ranks behind the all-time Star Wars memorabilia record held by Tom Jung’s original artwork for the 1977 Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope poster, which sold for $3.8 million.

The lightsaber was used by Mark Hamill in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back during the unforgettable duel in which Darth Vader reveals he is Luke Skywalker’s father before severing his son’s hand, as pointed out by Artnet. Created specifically for that climactic sequence, the auction lot included not only the lightsaber but also the detachable severed-hand effects rig that allowed filmmakers to achieve the dramatic scene years before digital visual effects became commonplace.

The prosthetic hand was sculpted by legendary makeup artist Stuart Freeborn using Hamill’s own hand as a model, and the unique prop remained in Freeborn’s personal collection after filming. Best known for creating characters such as Yoda, Chewbacca, and Jabba the Hutt, Freeborn’s connection adds another layer of significance to an already remarkable piece of movie history.

Heritage Auctions described the lightsaber as far more than a film prop, calling it a centerpiece of one of the most emotionally powerful moments in the Star Wars saga. That historical importance was clearly reflected in the bidding, as collectors competed for an artifact tied to one of Hollywood’s most recognizable scenes.

The auction featured several other coveted pieces of entertainment memorabilia. A Wicked Witch of the West hat worn by Margaret Hamilton in The Wizard of Oz sold for $550,000, while Gene Wilder’s cocoa-colored top hat from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory realized $350,000. Daenerys Targaryen’s chest containing dragon eggs from the first season of Game of Thrones brought $312,500, and two rugs from The Big Lebowski far exceeded expectations, selling for $350,000 and $375,000 after opening with starting bids of just $15,000 each.
With the latest sale, Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber has become the most valuable Star Wars prop ever to cross the auction block, reaffirming that the most iconic artifacts from the galaxy far, far away continue to command prices worthy of their legendary status.
