Leica has released a new limited edition camera set for the rock legend Andy Summers and pays tribute to his passion for photography. Summers, a former member of The Police, is best known as a Grammy-winning guitarist; however, he is also a well known Leica photographer with 36 years of experience and has exhibited his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, Beaux-Arts Gallery in London, BLD Gallery in Tokyo, amongst others. For the special edition, Leica collaborated with Fender, which has created a matching Signature Stratocaster guitar. The Leica M Monochrom “Signature” is technically identical to the standard black-and-white mirrorless camera it’s based on. The highlight of the limited edition is its special leatherette wrap that features a collage of several of Summer’s photographs from around the world. Other special touches include a red engraving of Summers’ signature on top of the camera body.
The special edition camera set also includes a Leica Summicron-M f/2 35mm ASPH lens with a new look for the exterior matching the camera body, vintage lens hood, a Fender-inspired camera strap, and a leather camera bag from Oberwerth. Only 50 sets will be available for sale worldwide and you can get one for yourself by shelling out $15,000. In case you’re more interested in music, you can get the limited edition Fender Stratocaster created for Andy Summers which gets the same image collage along with the legendary guitarist’s signature. The guitar is priced at $12,500. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to have the opportunity to work with two leading producers of two fundamental instruments I hold close to my heart, Leica Camera and Fender,” Summers said. “I’ve always thought of my photographic experience as tearing pages from a book and then reshuffling the results into a new visual syntax, and the collage-forward design of the Leica M Monochrom Signature is the physical embodiment of just that.”
