The thieves had devised an elaborate plan to deceive the diamond’s jeweler owner. For a year, they convinced him they were serious buyers, going so far as to rent luxury cars, hold meetings at upscale hotels, and even enlist a renowned diamond expert to authenticate the stone. Sounds pretty convincing, right?
The diamond at the center of all this drama was truly a dazzler and one of a kind. The rare pink diamond, worth $25 million, is classified as Fancy Intense and weighs 21.25 carats. In addition to exceptional clarity, symmetry, and polish, experts say there is only a 0.01 percent chance of finding another like it. This unmatched beauty made it a prime target. To place its importance in perspective, the Graff Pink (24.78 ct) fetched $46 million in 2010; the record-setting Pink Legacy (18.96 ct, Fancy Vivid Pink) also stands as one of the world’s most valuable pink gems. To pull off their plan, the plotters had to lure the stone out of the secure jewelry shop. The suspects convinced the jeweler to bring it to a villa under the pretense of meeting a “buyer.” Once the diamond was presented, they seized it and fled.
Dubai Police’s CID teams, armed with advanced technology, deployed a specialized task force that raided their hideouts. In just a few hours, they managed to recover the diamond hidden inside a small refrigerator before it could leave the emirate.
“Multiple patrols arrived within minutes, began the investigation, and offered constant reassurance. To my surprise, the very next morning, they called to say the suspects had been arrested and the diamond recovered,” shared the relieved merchant, who has been operating in Dubai for the last twenty years, according to Forbes Middle East. In the end, the thieves’ year-long Ocean’s Eleven act turned into a 24-hour Dubai Police drama with a happy ending.
