Montblanc is a celebration of the art of writing, but this time, with its latest Writers Edition series, it pays homage to a writer. Abraham “Bram” Stoker was an Irish author best known today as the creator of the iconic Gothic horror novel Dracula. Before the world swooned over Edward Cullen, there was Bram’s Dracula, born from an imagination that shaped one of literature’s most enduring myths.
His 1897 masterpiece, Dracula, became permanently etched in literature and popular culture, and now it is taking on the form of a writing instrument thanks to the Montblanc Writers Edition Homage to Bram Stoker. To celebrate this legacy, the pen, which has always been mightier than the sword, now becomes scarier than one by adapting elements from one of history’s most iconic horror narratives onto its exterior.
Montblanc translates Stoker’s narrative into physical form using colours that immediately spring to mind upon hearing the word Dracula. From deep reds and ominous blacks to the sharp silhouettes of the cone and cap, the collection draws inspiration from the Pravaz syringe, a 19th-century medical innovation that references the novel’s theme of blood transfusion. God lies in the details, but so does Dracula. Subtle engravings capture the psychological tension of the story, alongside personal elements drawn from Stoker’s own life and family heritage.
The Writers Edition Homage to Bram Stoker Limited Edition tries to capture the painful moment following a vampire’s bite. Made from resin, the cap and barrel feature a marbled red-and-black effect that symbolises the mixing of red blood and the dark poison from a vampire’s bite. An engraving of the author’s signature adorns the cap, while two marks evoking the punctures left by a vampire on its victim sit above the clip. The Writers Edition Homage to Bram Stoker Limited Edition 1897 is based on transformation. Not into a handsome prince, but into a bat. That explains the image of a bat at rest, with the cap and barrel shaped to resemble its folded wings. Crafted from Ag 925 sterling silver, the writing instrument incorporates the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl and is set with red garnets, once again referencing the vampire’s favourite hobby of biting. The design of the cone is based on a real-life architectural element: the columns outside London’s Lyceum Theatre, where Stoker worked as a theatre manager.
Limited to just 93 pieces, the Writers Edition Homage to Bram Stoker Limited Edition 93 is dedicated to Bram’s passion for science and medicine. The pen looks suitably lab-like, boasting technical transparency and mechanical references through syringe-like cut-outs, Celtic knots drawn by Stoker’s sister and a red jasper emblem.
The fountain pen is crafted from solid Au 750 white gold with a blackened finish. Its window-like openings and technical elements are reminiscent of the Pravaz syringe. At the very top sits a Montblanc emblem in red jasper, accompanied by two garnets. Last, but certainly not least, is the Writers Edition Homage to Bram Stoker Limited Edition 8, which flaunts the protective symbols and rituals used to ward off vampires in Dracula. Perhaps more useful than its counterparts, this design is certainly the most reassuring, featuring a floral composition of garlic and wild-rose motifs for those who still quiver at the mention of the monster.
The elements serve as reminders of protection against evil and look resplendent in a combination of hand-applied enamel, mother-of-pearl inlays and intricate engraving. This edition is also crafted from solid Au 750 gold, featuring fittings in signature gold, brilliant-cut diamonds and accents of red garnet. A striking yet serene floral pattern adorns the solid-gold cone, while the cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in pavé-set diamonds to ensure that the maison remains the star of the story. Like a complete story, the collection presents multiple accompanying elements alongside the writing instruments, including a special purple ink and a black textured notebook wrapped in velvet. A set of round steel cufflinks set with jasper completes the collection.
