The bride and groom were not football superstar
Cristiano Ronaldo and his fiancée Georgina Rodríguez, but Fábio and Nicole, a Madeiran couple living in France who had returned home to get married. Yet their nuptials reportedly drew more than 2,000 curious spectators to Funchal Cathedral on the Portuguese island of Madeira. The reason had nothing to do with them. Ronaldo’s rumored wedding had been making headlines for months, and by that Saturday, speculation had reached fever pitch.
It took a while for everyone to realize that the bride wasn’t Georgina. Nicole was already late for her 3 p.m. nuptials, and the enormous crowd outside reportedly made getting into her own wedding even more difficult. The cathedral later commented, “We’ve never seen anything like this here at the Cathedral.” And Funchal Cathedral is around 500 years old, no less. Apparently, even five centuries of history couldn’t prepare it for the frenzy that comes with having the world’s most famous footballer, now a billionaire, accidentally attached to a wedding taking place inside.
To be fair, the fans who arrived hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite football legend hadn’t conjured the entire story out of thin air. Ronaldo’s marriage has been a topic of speculation for years, particularly since his engagement to Rodríguez. Eagle-eyed fans and entertainment reporters have scrutinized everything from Instagram Stories and hotel rooms to family gatherings and diamond rings for clues about when and where the couple might finally marry. Adding considerable fuel to the fire was a report in The Sun claiming that staff at the five-star Savoy Palace had been told Ronaldo had booked the top two floors of an exclusive section called The Reserve. The hotel had already been linked in Portuguese media to a possible Ronaldo wedding reception, while Funchal Cathedral itself had repeatedly been floated as a potential venue.
Then there were Ronaldo’s own words. Speaking about his marriage plans last year, the footballer said he hoped to marry Rodríguez “after the World Cup,” a comment that made the summer of 2026 an obvious target for speculation. Putting the August 8 rumors to rest was Father Marcos Gonçalves, the parish priest of Funchal Cathedral, who said: “This is the only wedding taking place here today. I do not have a booking for Cristiano Ronaldo.” Ironically, what happened next may have made the rumor look even more convincing. The cathedral doors were closed and access restricted, not because one of the world’s biggest celebrities was secretly getting married inside, but because an actual religious wedding was taking place and Fábio and Nicole deserved some privacy.
Local reports suggested that the restricted access, combined with the international media speculation, only reinforced the belief among some of those waiting outside that something significant was happening inside. Ronaldo appeared to find the whole episode hilarious, reacting with laughing emojis to an Instagram post about the chaos. His sister, Elma Aveiro, took a firmer stance, criticizing the speculation and saying, “People don’t understand that the media knows nothing… and then they invent things.” While crowds descended on the cathedral with phones at the ready, at least one particularly committed Ronaldo fan reportedly traveled from Germany to Madeira hoping to witness the occasion, according to Euronews.
The man everyone had come to see, however, was nowhere near the altar. Ronaldo, Rodríguez and their family were instead enjoying the Mediterranean sunshine in Capri, Italy, apparently unbothered by the fact that thousands of people had just turned up for a wedding they weren’t having, before Ronaldo’s new Saudi football season gets underway.
