Rick Ross casually dropped $700,000 installing incredibly fast Starlink internet on his black and gold Gulfstream G550, a service that costs an eye-watering $20,000 every month so the rapper can stream, run his businesses, and stay on calls while his jet climbs to 51,000 feet

American rapper Rick Ross has taken private-jet connectivity to an unusually expensive level. The rapper and entrepreneur has upgraded his Gulfstream G550 with Starlink, giving the aircraft the kind of high-speed internet connection that can make a long flight feel surprisingly close to being at home. For Ross, who uses his jet for far more than simply getting from one city to another, staying connected in the air is part of the luxury.

The eye-catching price came from a tweet by Sawyer Merritt on X, which reported that Ross said he spent $700,000 putting Starlink on his private jet. Ross described the connection as “unbelievable,” explaining that he can be on a phone call before takeoff and continue talking as the aircraft takes off without the call dropping. The figure is particularly striking because Starlink currently lists its aviation equipment at $200,000 for most business jets, with installation quoted separately depending on the aircraft.

Turning a private jet into a flying office

The appeal of Starlink aboard Ross’s G550 is not simply its headline download speed. Starlink’s current Aviation Global Unlimited service advertises downloads of up to 1 Gbps with its Performance antenna, or up to 500 Mbps with the earlier-generation antenna. The company also advertises latency as low as 20 milliseconds, although those speeds are maximum figures rather than guaranteed real-world performance. The Global Unlimited plan costs $20,000 a month, or $240,000 a year.

That kind of connection changes what passengers can realistically do during a flight. Ross and his team can stream video, hold video calls, work on cloud platforms, upload large files, communicate with his businesses and music operation, and stay active online throughout a journey. Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit network is also designed to provide connectivity beyond land, making it particularly useful on long international and oceanic routes.

The complex retrofit involves mounting the antenna, integrating power and cabin networks, modifying the aircraft and completing regulatory testing and certification. The aircraft pictured is not Rick Ross’s jet.

Ross’s reference to staying on a phone call should not be interpreted as Starlink turning his G550 into a flying cellular tower. The internet connection can support Wi-Fi calling or internet-based services such as FaceTime and other VoIP platforms, but the exact service Ross was using has not been disclosed. Likewise, there is no confirmation of which Starlink antenna is installed on his aircraft, so the advertised 1 Gbps speed should not be attributed to Ross specifically.

Why a $200,000 system can become a $700,000 project

Installing Starlink on a business jet is a very different proposition from mounting a residential dish on a roof. The antenna has to be integrated into an aircraft while meeting aviation certification and engineering requirements, and the installation involves much more than attaching hardware to the fuselage.

Technicians have to route power and data cables through the aircraft, install the necessary networking equipment, and work around the highly customized interiors found on private jets. Existing equipment can also get in the way. A Gulfstream G550 Starlink installation documented by West Star Aviation, for example, required existing cabin equipment to be relocated because it occupied the planned position for the Starlink power supply.

The aircraft is also taken out of service during the work, with installers commonly quoting roughly two weeks or more for a retrofit. That means Ross is paying for specialist aviation engineering and certification work rather than a conventional telecommunications installation. Starlink itself directs customers to authorized dealers for installation pricing because the cost varies by aircraft.

That helps explain why the $700,000 figure cannot simply be described as a $500,000 Starlink installation fee. The $200,000 equipment price is clear, but Ross has not publicly itemized the remaining $500,000. It could include aircraft-specific engineering, installation, modifications and associated work, while the annual service would be a separate expense unless Ross’s quoted figure includes it.

The black-and-gold Golden Eagle

The aircraft makes the story even more fitting. Ross’s jet is a 2012 Gulfstream GV-SP, better known as the G550. Fitted with two Rolls-Royce engines, the aircraft can fly roughly 6,750 nautical miles and reach 51,000 feet, making long-distance connectivity especially useful aboard the jet.

Ross calls the aircraft the Golden Eagle, and its black-and-gold exterior carries his branding and the Maybach Music Group logo. The tail number is personal too. Ross has explained that 33055 represents the ZIP code of the community where he grew up, while 305 reflects Miami’s familiar area code. He also revealed that the custom paint alone cost about $500,000.

Ross’s net worth helps put the expenditure into perspective, which is estimated at approximately $180 million. A $700,000 connectivity upgrade would therefore represent a significant luxury purchase, but one that fits the lifestyle of an artist and businessman who has built a sizable fortune beyond music.

The latest upgrade offers an unusually revealing glimpse into Ross’s idea of private-jet luxury. He spent half a million dollars creating the Golden Eagle’s signature appearance and now says he has spent another $700,000 making sure the jet remains connected almost everywhere it flies. For an owner whose aircraft doubles as an office, entertainment space and mobile command center, the price of staying online has clearly become just another part of flying in style.
