That’s why car collectors with deep pockets often sell supercars from their collection when their value has appreciated.
Real estate mogul Manny Khoshbin has been doing this for a long time, so when he makes a video listing the cars he’d definitely buy again, and those he wouldn’t, it’s worth paying attention to. Especially since it could save you the trouble of finding out yourself if you have pockets deep enough.
For starters, Khoshbin has a few simple rules when it comes to car collecting. Supercars in his collection need to provide thrills and exhilaration, or appreciate. If a car that’s being hyped as special doesn’t do either, it doesn’t have a place in his collection. As such, Khoshbin has a few cars that he thinks are overhyped or just not exciting enough to drive, or depreciate instead of making him money.
The five cars on Khoshbin’s ‘naughty’ list include the Saleen S7, McLaren Speedtail, Ferrari 360 Spider, Lamborghini Huracan Miura Edition, and Porsche 911 50th Anniversary. Some, like the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo Competition Package, were exciting but too analogue for Khoshbin, with no traction control to help save the driver from the ferocious power delivery of nearly 1,000 horsepower.
Others, like the Ferrari 360 Spider, were underwhelming and depreciated too hard to be considered a collector car. The McLaren Speedtail gave the millionaire a bunch of issues and was underwhelming to drive, earning his non-recommendation. The special edition cars ultimately turned out to be just a special paint job and not much else.
The five cars on Khoshbin’s ‘nice’ list include the McLaren P1, Porsche Carrera GT, Ferrari F40, McLaren 722, and Pagani Huayra. Earning special mention is Khoshbin’s special edition Bugatti Chiron Hermes, a car the millionaire says he would have picked if the list went to six.
What seems to stand as a common thread between the cars Khoshbin would buy again is that they’re all exciting to drive in a straight line, while having appreciated since Khoshbin sold them from his collection.
Manny Khoshbin displays the mark of a true businessman even when it comes to something as emotional as collecting cars. That’s probably how he’s managed to amass one of the slickest car collections out there, including the 1-of-40 Bugatti Bolide track-only hypercar. After all, it takes money to make money, and some of the best business deals have no room for emotions, whether it’s the world’s best supercar or not.
