For most Uber users in Chicago, opening the rideshare app means choosing between a sedan, an SUV, or perhaps a luxury option like Uber Black. Lately, a handful of lucky riders have seen something far rarer appear on their screens. Listed for $500 an hour, streetwear designer Don C’s personal Virgil Abloh Mercedes-Maybach S 680 has shown up as a bookable ride, offering an experience that blends celebrity ownership, automotive exclusivity, and high-end luxury into one very expensive trip.

The listing reportedly allows only two passengers, each chauffeured by a professional driver. That might seem like an indulgence for such a steep price, but the rarity of the car explains much of the appeal. This is not just any Maybach. It is one of only 150 “Maybach by Virgil Abloh” units ever produced worldwide; a special edition born from the late designer’s collaboration with Mercedes-Benz chief designer Gorden Wagener. Released in 2022, it followed earlier Abloh x Mercedes concept works and marked one of the few Abloh automotive creations available for purchase rather than being locked away as a one-off showpiece.

The Maybach by Virgil Abloh stands apart through its two-tone paintwork. The upper body wears the deep Obsidian Black long associated with the Maybach brand, while the lower half and the signature monoblock wheels are finished in a gold-like Sand hue exclusive to this model. The cabin mirrors the same palette, with black leather and piano black trim up top and Sand leather accents below, even extending to the plush high-pile floormats. Throughout the interior, special badging marks the collaboration, and the infotainment system itself is re-skinned in Sand tones with custom icons and graphics referencing Abloh’s fashion work.

Under the hood, the car is powered by a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 producing 604 horsepower, the same mechanical setup as the standard S 680. But the real value here is in the design and scarcity. Each original buyer also received a custom leather-wrapped presentation box containing a 1:18 scale model of the car, the key fobs, and a branded cover to keep the vehicle pristine when not in use.

Whether every Chicagoan can actually see the Maybach as an option on their Uber app remains unclear. As reported by The Drive, the listing is not universally available, making the offering feel more like an exclusive urban legend than a standard ride. For those who can book it, however, the experience is less about getting from point A to B and more about spending an hour inside one of the rarest expressions of luxury and design on the road today.
