All good things come to an end, and so will HBO’s acclaimed TV series, Succession. While news of the release of Succession season four will delight fans, the fact that season four will indeed be the last will also make them gloomy. The optimist will revel that he can binge watch the show from start to finish. Succession’s creator and showrunner, British author Jesse Armstrong, told The New Yorker, “It’s pretty definitively the end… the show is against bullshit, and I wouldn’t like to be bullshitting anyone when I was talking about it.”

HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloy reiterated Armstrongs’s sentiments when asked about a Succession spinoff, “I always say ‘never say never’… it doesn’t seem to me that there’s something in Succession where you would go, ‘Let’s follow just this kid’ or whatever. It doesn’t seem like a natural thing to me. But if (creator Jesse Armstrong) said, I want to do this, then I would follow Jesse’s lead.”

The writers had been planning the end of the critically acclaimed satirical drama since late 2021. Armstrong didnt wholly shut down the possibility of revisiting the Roys in a different show. “I do think that this succession story that we were telling is complete,” he said. “This is the muscular season to exhaust all our reserves of interest, and I think there’s some pain in all these characters that’s really strong. But the feeling that there could be something else in an allied world, or allied characters, or some of the same characters – that’s also strong in me. I have caveated the end of the show, when I’ve talked to some of my collaborators, like: Maybe there’s another part of this world we could come back to, if there was an appetite?”

Now that’s some food for thought! Only time will tell what will succeed Succession!
