The rise and reprise of the fabled Fenix

The March winds blow in something fresh in Mumbai. Sobo’s swish set, high-flying business travellers that are regulars to the bay, and just about anyone who appreciates a stellar meal, they’re all breathing a collective sigh of relief as Fenix at The Oberoi, Mumbai, has now reopened.

Enjoy the light-filled lobby, tear your eyes away from the magnificent sweep of Marine Drive from their substantial picture windows, stroll past the iconic tomato-red grand piano, and you’ll find yourself in the stylish restaurant. The generously proportioned Fenix (it sits 92!) now feels like a friend’s elegant and spacious living room. If one’s friends are the sort who always fly first class and entertain on their private yachts, that is.

Chef Yazdin Pardiwala, who heads the kitchen here, has pulled out all the stops to create the elegant menu that complements this space. The fresh, new menu at Fenix is ‘comfort food’ but for the well-travelled and the fitness conscious, epicures who appreciate the finer things in life.

So, of course you have beautifully presented Japanese, which ticks all these boxes and then some. The charcoal Robatayaki, fuelled by coconut shell charcoal briquettes serves up a range of exclusive meats, seafood, and vegetarian dishes, grilled to perfection. Ruben Santos creates some truly delicate delectables at the Sushi Bar, and there’s even a selection of cocktails that have been created to go perfectly with this part of the menu. There are plenty of other Asian, European, and regional Indian dishes on offer as well. What’s special is that there are almost as many vegetarian ones, crafted with just as much care and flair as the poultry, meat, and seafood ones.

Since Fenix rises with the sun, they have a vast array of the freshest fruit, breakfast cold cuts, gourmet cheeses, freshly made morning pastries, cold pressed juices, and special juice blends with a focus on heart-healthy, organic preparations for breakfast. Lunch and dinner are all about the best of world cuisine served à la carte. Spirits, beers, hand-crafted cocktails, and a good wine list round off the experience splendidly. This is definitely an all-day dining restaurant that you will enjoy from dawn to way past dusk, be it while you’re staying at the hotel, or booking for a brisk business lunch, a relaxed meal with friends and family, or an intimate date night with the significant other.
