Gordon Murray, the legendary automotive designer behind the McLaren F1 and numerous Formula One innovations, has announced the creation of Gordon Murray Special Vehicles (GMSV), a new division dedicated to producing ultra-exclusive vehicles and continuation models. The announcement marks a significant expansion of the Gordon Murray Group’s capabilities in the ultra-luxury automotive sector.
The new division will operate alongside Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) and Gordon Murray Engineering, focusing on three distinct product categories: Bespoke, Heritage, and Special Vehicles. The Bespoke line will cater to individual client commissions, offering completely personalized vehicles built on a versatile new platform capable of accommodating various configurations and powertrains.
Perhaps most intriguingly, the Heritage category opens the possibility of revival cars from Murray’s illustrious past. While legal restrictions may prevent the recreation of the iconic McLaren F1, automotive enthusiasts are already speculating about potential revivals of other Murray classics, such as the Light Car Company Rocket. The division could also explore the creation of continuation models of historic racing cars from Murray’s successful tenure with Brabham and McLaren’s Formula One teams.
The Special Vehicles category will focus on limited-edition models produced in slightly higher numbers than the one-off Bespoke vehicles, potentially exploring new market segments for the brand. This three-pronged approach allows GMSV to address different levels of exclusivity while maintaining the company’s commitment to engineering excellence. The timing of this announcement follows a period of significant growth for the Gordon Murray Group. The company’s T.50 supercar has already reached customers across Europe, the Middle East, and Japan, with US deliveries imminent. Production of the track-focused T.50s Niki Lauda and the T.33 series is also progressing according to plan.
“Over the years, we have received many requests to design and build one-offs and specials of all kinds,” Murray explained in the announcement. The company had previously resisted such requests while focusing on the development and launch of the T.50 supercar and other core projects. However, with those programs now well established, the time was right to expand into the ultra-exclusive market.
The creation of GMSV represents more than just a business expansion; it’s an opportunity for Murray’s team to push the boundaries of automotive design and engineering even further. The division will operate with its own independent structure and engineering team, ensuring dedicated resources for these highly specialized projects.
While pricing details haven’t been disclosed, industry observers expect GMSV’s creations to command substantial premiums ($3 million+), likely requiring clients to possess significant wealth beyond that of typical supercar buyers. Despite the expected high costs, the announcement has already generated considerable interest among collectors and enthusiasts eager to own a truly unique Gordon Murray creation.
