Not London or Geneva, but Copenhagen is the world’s most expensive place to dine out at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

The Kong Hans Kælder in Copenhagen

A meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant is never a cheap affair, especially in Copenhagen. According to an analysis by Chef’s Pencil that reviewed the menus of 3,517 Michelin-starred restaurants (one, two, and three stars) in all countries, Denmark has emerged as the most expensive dining location. An upscale meal in Copenhagen will set you back by an average of 400 euros ($430) per person for dinner. The capital boasts 14 Michelin-starred restaurants and is followed by Macao, where an average meal costs 265 euros. The world’s gambling capital may help you make money, but then you might end up spending it on a Michelin-starred delicacy, as Macao has one of the highest densities of Michelin-starred restaurants per mile in the world.

Hong Kong, San Francisco, and Dubai are next in line, with prices falling to $259. Despite being a global financial hub attracting tourists from around the globe, Dubai manages a decent price for a top-notch meal. For those who believe a meal is only enjoyable when it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, it’s best to focus on places like Vietnam, where it costs $130 on average to dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant. More affordable Michelin meals can also be found in Brazil, specifically in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where 13 Michelin restaurants tantalize your taste buds and pockets with a tasting menu costing just $131.

Michelin-star meals are more affordable in Europe, particularly in Malta and Greece. It may be tiny, but the small island nation of Malta is home to five Michelin restaurants costing €125 euro ($134) per person. A meal in the Mediterranean costs less than half of what it does in Copenhagen. No wonder the richest spend ample amounts of time vacationing here and enjoying the good life, while saving some bucks.
